When to use it
Why people write to the Royal Family
Congratulations and good wishes
Mark a royal occasion - a birthday, wedding, coronation or public milestone - with a personal letter to His Majesty or a member of the Royal Family.
Royal patronage requests
Charities, schools and community organisations write to request royal patronage, support or association with a cause.
Birthday and anniversary cards
Members of the public traditionally send birthday greetings to senior royals; a letter is the most personal way to do so.
Invitations and civic requests
Lord Mayors, civic bodies and event organisers write to request royal attendance at significant local or national events.
Appeals and petitions
Formal petitions or humanitarian appeals addressed to the Monarch or other members of the Royal Family via the relevant private secretary.
Condolences and tributes
Personal letters of condolence sent to the Royal Family at times of national or personal loss.
Members of the public have written to the Royal Family for centuries. Whether you're writing to congratulate His Majesty, request royal patronage for a charity, or mark a personal milestone with a letter to the Prince of Wales or another senior royal, we'll ensure your letter reaches the Royal Household the same working day.
Letters to the Royal Family are handled by the respective private secretary's office at each royal residence. For Buckingham Palace, the correspondence is reviewed by a lady-in-waiting or equerry. A polite, clearly addressed letter on formal topics is most likely to receive an acknowledgement.
We print every letter on 100gsm paper, fold it into a plain windowed envelope, frank it and hand it to Royal Mail the same working day if ordered before 2:30pm UK time. Choose First Class for routine correspondence or Royal Mail Signed For where you want delivery confirmation.
